Pop singer to politician: Lady Gaga asks the US senate to end 'don't ask, don't tell' regime

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GG5VK2lquEcendofvid

[starttext]

By Sophie Forbes

Future President: Lady Gaga posted a video clip on her Twitter page today asking the US Senate to abolish the "Don't ask, don't tell' law

Is she planning on running for President?

Lady Gaga used her huge global fan base and resulting public influence to reach out to the United States government yesterday about an issue close to hear heart.

The 24-year-old singer, who on Sunday swept the board at the MTV Video Music Awards taking home eight gongs, recorded a video which she posted on her Twitter asking for the abolition of the 'Don't ask, Don't tell' legislation which forces gay and lesbian servicemen and women to live in secrecy or risk being discharged.

Scroll down to watch the video...

In the seven and a half minute clip, Gaga, dressed in a black suit and tie over a white shirt, sits in front of an American flag and asks her 6 million Twitter followers to urge the US Senate to overturn the 1993 legislation by contacting their local senators personally.

She followed the clip with a tweet professing her love of US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nevada) who promptly responded with an invitation to visit him in Las Vegas.

'Since then (1993) 14,000 Americans have been discharged from the armed forces, refused the right to serve their country and sent home regardless of honorable service or how valuable they may have been to their units,' says the singer in the video.

Make a difference: She asked her 'fellow Americans' to help by contacting their local senators directly

'I have called both of the senators that operate in my district. I will not stop calling until I reach them,' she says
'I am here to be a voice for my generation,' she says.

'We are not asking you to agree with or approve the moral implications of homosexuality. We’re asking you to do your job – to protect the constitution.'

'Ultimately the law is being enforced by using gay profiling and gay soldiers have become targets,' Gaga says.

'Not only is the law unconstitutional, but it’s not even being properly or fairly enforced by the government.'

The Bad Romance singer actually brought four solders with her to the MTV Video Music Awards who had been discharged under this law or voluntarily left due to negative pressures and was escorted down the red carpet by them.

On the night she won 8 out of the 9 awards she was nominated for.

Michael J Fox proves he's still laughing in the face of Parkinson's disease as he hams it up for new calendar

Fancy a drink? Michael J Fox has to sit on a bar to be the same height as supermodel Tatjana Patitz in shots for a calendar for the German optical company Carl Zeiss

At 5ft 4in, Michael J Fox hasn't always stood eye to eye with his co-stars.
And the comic actor clearly enjoyed having a laugh at his diminutive status in a new photoshoot.

The Back To The Future star hammed it up with 5ft 11in German supermodel Tatjana Patitz for the set of pictures for a new exclusive calendar for German optical company Carl Zeiss AG.

The pictures were taken by Canadian singer-turned-photographer Bryan Adams, and showed Fox and Patitz in a variety of comical poses.

'The photographs were intended to be cheerful and sexy representations of how Zeiss lenses expertly capture any subject matter, large and small,' says producer Trixi Mahd Soltani.

One shot shows Fox sitting on a Manhattan's Cipriani bar to be the same height as his statuesque counterpart, while another shows him scoffing a big plate of spaghetti at a table while Patitz picks at a salad.

'We had to rush in and out to do our shoot in the morning, before they opened for business at 10am,' recalls Soltani.

Pasta joke: The diminutive star scoffs a large plate of spaghetti while his taller dinner date picks over a salad

Walkies: Fox is taken for a walk by a Great Dane while Patitz is untroubled by her little pug

But the spaghetti wasn't too appetising for Fox.

'I don't think Michael was up to actually eating it that early in the morning,' adds Soltani.

Another snap shows the Family Ties actor being taken for a walk by a Great Dane dog, while Patitz has no trouble with her smaller pug.

Fox and Patitz both immediately agreed to be part of the project, with New York City selected as the location for its sense of micro/macro - near/far variety.

Little and large: Fox needs to stand on a bench to reach the heights of his model counterpart

Shoe gazing: Fox and and Patitz, in high-heeled black platform shoes contrast on a New York street

At one point, Patitz, 44, is seen towering above 49-year-old Fox in seven-inch platform stilettos as he bends down to tie his shoelaces.

And in another shot, the actor's head is barely seen above a limousine's sun roof while the model, wearing sunglasses, has a good view of the city scape.

Fox, who will this year be a guest star in Larry David comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm, is also seen attempting to dance with the model.

The Carl Zeiss Art-Calendar 2011, which will be unveiled at a special showing in Hamburg next month, will be printed in an edition of 1,000 photographs for the company's top clients.

Sealed with a kiss: Orlando Bloom gives his new wife Miranda Kerr a kiss and a cuddle on the set of his new Three Musketeers film

He is busy filming in Germany while his pregnant wife has been furthering her modelling career in Los Angeles.

So newlyweds Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr were clearly delighted to see each other as she visited the 33-year-old actor on set yesterday.

Bloom, who was clad in his 17th century costume for the Three Musketeers film, only had eyes for his young wife on the set in Wuerzburg, Germany.

The smiling pair hugged and kissed in a break from shooting, with Bloom at one point whispering into Kerr's ear.

Bloom expressed his happiness at the baby news during a Munich photo call for the movie back in August.

'I'm really excited about it, it's great,' he said, referring to the fact that he could be away for much of Kerr's pregnancy. 'I'll go home as often as possible. She'll come out here too.'

Give it some welly, Kate! Miss Winslet clomps around in very big boots

Putting the boot in: Kate Winslet wore wellies on an outing in Gloucestershire with her son Joe and a friend

These boots were made for walking, and Kate Winslet's been doing plenty of that, judging by her impressive thigh muscles.

She was spotted wearing navy wellies with denim shorts and a cardigan while on an outing with son, Joe Mendes, and a friend near her Gloucestershire home.

There was no sign of her new boyfriend, Burberry model Louis Dowler.

Mother-of-two Winslet split from her second husband Sam Mendes in March, after seven years of marriage.

Following weeks of speculation, the Oscar-winner went public with her romance with 34-year-old Dowler in August.

Winslet, 34, has just completed filming mini-series Mildred Pierce, alongside True Blood star Evan Rachel Wood, which will air on HBO in 2011.

Kate plays 1940s divorcee Mildred, in the story of a middle-class housewife who divorces her husband and goes on to raise their children on her own.

Haven't you grown up, Anna Popplewell? Narnia star sashays up the red carpet in hot pants and high heels

By Sara Mccorquodale

Child actress no more: Anna Llewellyn showed off her adult sense of style on the red carpet at the premiere of The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud

The last time we saw little Anna Popplewell, she was an excited teenager making waves on the big screen in an adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia.

At the tender age of 16, her portrayal of Susan in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe made her the envy of aspiring child actresses and gained her critical acclaim.

And it seems, after a hiatus in which she studied English Literature at Oxford University, the 21-year-old is ready to make her mark on British cinema - this time as an adult.

Sashaying up the 'red' carpet at the premiere of Zac Efron vehicle The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud, the actress wore embellished black hotpants and peep-toe sky-high heels.

The message to casting agents was clear - no more child parts please.

Although Popplewell still has the same girl-next-door good looks that made her perfect for the part in the Narnia films, she is noticeably more refined.

In addition to her risque sense of style, the former student displayed a mane of glossy chesnut hair and a megawatt smile.

Eye-catching: The actress wore hot-pants and high heels for the event

Her next appearance on the big screen will be a reprisal of Susan in the next Narnia film, The Voyage of the Dawntreader.

Like The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the film will also be based on the novel by C. S. Lewis.

After this, it is unclear what her next role will be but we are pretty sure she won't be at a loose end for long.

'I want to celebrate curves... even though I don't have many myself,' says Victoria Beckham the size zero fashion designer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ts4khOy0EoMendofvid

By Daily Mail Reporter

On the sofa: Victoria Beckham joined Barbara Walters and Whoopi Goldberg on The View for their 'Fashion Friday' segment

Victoria Beckham has revealed she wants her fashion line to be a celebration of womanly curves - despite being a rail thin size zero.

The Spice Girl turned designer showed off the latest looks from her new Autumn Winter 2010 collection on US TV show The View today.

She said: 'For me, colour is always important. So I've got some strong colours this season. It's about texture, and also a lot of drapery.

'And I just want to celebrate a woman's curves. Although, you're right, I don't have that many myself.'

Posh looks: The star, who was wearing jeans from her denim range, was on the show to talk about her Autumn Winter 2010 collection

Host Barbara Walters said: 'I didn't say anything!'

Victoria added: 'I want to celebrate a woman's curves. I love a woman's body and I want to make women look and feel fantastic.'

She then showed off several looks from her fall collection, including her handbags, to applause from the studio audience.

She said the bags were aimed at working mums - which means that they are 'chic' as well as spacious.

She also joked that she plans to stick with designing, rather than return to her singing days with the Spice Girls.

Body of work: Posh said she wanted her clothing to celebrate a woman's shapely figure, but admitted she didn't have many curves

Asked by Barbara Walters if she planned to perform again, Victoria, 36, joked: 'I don't think so. I was never really that good anyway!'

She also told how she would love to dress America's First Lady, Michelle Obama.
She said: 'I would love to.

'You know, I dressed Sarah Jessica Parker for an event at the White House so I'm getting there. I'm in the door!'

She also beamed with pride as Walters showed off the front page of fashion industry bible Women's Wear Daily [WWD], featuring one of Victoria's designs.

The mother-of-three said: 'It's been a real whirlwind. To be on the cover of WWD is such a big deal.'

Look, she's smiling! Victoria giggled as she was asked if she would ever go back to the days of performing with the Spice Girls. She confessed she was 'never really that good'

Explaining that she designed it herself, she said: 'With this dress that was on the cover it was me in my studio, with a metre-and-a-half of parachute silk, draping it on myself and tying it in a knot and saying, "OK, what do I think?"

'And to look at where it started and see it on the cover, it is incredible, it really is a dream come true.'

She also set the record straight about comments she refused to use size zero models for her fashion shows.

'The tabloids said that I said that, and in actual fact I didn't,' she said.

Proud moment: Posh said she was delighted that fashion industry newspaper Women's Wear Daily featured one of her dresses on the cover

'However it is something that I do agree with and take into consideration every season. I take my position very seriously.

'For me so long as the girls are healthy, aren't too young and [are] fit, that's what I'm looking for. I don't want a really, really skinny model.'

She admitted that she was a size zero herself - but said she was healthy.

She said: 'I work out, I eat healthily, I'm running around after three children.

She also weighed in on an earlier discussion the four female hosts were having about being bored of their own children.

'I wouldn't say I'm bored,' she said. 'I'm a bit fed up of having footballs kicked at me. Obviously they love soccer because of [dad] David [Beckham. Being a mum is hard.

'Being a working mum is extra hard.'

And she admitted that she might be living out fantasies of having a baby girl by dressing up the family's pet pooch, Coco.

Juggling act: Victoria says being a working mother is 'extra hard'

She said: 'She does get a pedicure, yes. The kids really have a lot of fun with Coco. And yes, it is dog friendly nail polish.

'She's a bulldog, she needs all the help she can get! We tried to femninize her a little bit, make her feel sexy.'

When it was suggested that she might need to have a daughter, she said: 'One day if we're lucky enough. They're all [the other kids] getting so big.'

And she poked fun at husband of 11 years, David. She said: 'He's great, we're very lucky.

'He's a pain in the neck sometimes, don't get me wrong. I mean, he looks perfect...'
Meanwhile, everyone in the audience of the ABC network show got to take home a bottle of her signature perfume.

Bright and bold: Posh's collection features plenty of colour

Lady Contrick: To her fans Lady Gaga is a cutting edge style icon. But is she really just a shameless plagiarist?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVU6nXLp1PMendofvid

[starttext]
By Liz Jones

A rash move: How the singer ripped off the meat dress, originally designed by Jana Sterbak

Not many dresses have the power to shock, but this one did. What on earth was Lady Gaga thinking? Had she finally gone too far? Many of her hardcore fans averted their eyes in horror.

No, not the ridiculous meat ensemble she wore to the Video Music Awards last week, but the full-length taffeta Giorgio Armani gown she also wore that night.

How could the pop star who has made her name contorting her frame into a succession of increasingly outrageous and avant garde costumes have stooped so low as to wear something so blatantly commercial and, well, wearable? What next, an ad for Pepsi?

Meaty: The original dress that Lady Gaga's shocking outfit was based on

To be honest, there was nowhere left for the 24-year-old pop star to go. To be dressed by the king of beige in one of his red carpet gowns was a daring move for a woman more used to shooting fireworks from her nipples, strapping herself into a jewelled gag for a performance at Carnegie Hall and meeting the Queen in a red Latex outfit at the Royal Variety Performance (as she curtsied, everything squeaked).

The problem for Lady Gaga is that nothing is shocking any more. Of course, she still tries, valiantly, to wear the unwearable.

Material girls: Madonna wore a corset and fishnets first

Take that meat dress. According to its Argentinian-born (where else?) designer Franc Fernandez, it was a matambre dress.

The name means beef wrapped around a stuffing, which is one way of describing the woman who has sold 15 million albums, 51 million singles - and counting.

Lady Gaga is the biggest pop star on the planet. Not many of us can hum one of her insipid, nursery rhyme tunes, of course. But she is instantly recognisable.

According to the fashion and music press, she is a style icon. She has just graced the cover of Vanity Fair, after all.

Flash forward: Hijacking David Bowie's look from the 1970s

She is adventurous. She is a shameless exhibitionist. But I am here to tell you she is not remotely new or innovative. The only really new thing about Lady Gaga is her talent for self-promotion.

Let's start with that beef ensemble, topped off with a jaunty steak beret. We saw an almost identical dress in 1987, when it was exhibited as a sculpture by Canadian artist Jana Sterbak and left to decompose.

Lady Gaga tried to clarify the meaning behind the dress by stating: 'I am not a piece of meat.' But isn't it telling that she commissioned the same designer to make her a meat bikini for a provocative pose on the cover of a men's magazine? This is not just derivative, but jawdroppingly cynical.

Can't get you out of my head: Kylie had this look long before Lady Gaga

Much of Lady Gaga's wardrobe turns out to be a little past its sell-by date. The jackets made from sweet wrappers, with exaggerated shoulders? First worn in the mid-Seventies by everyone from David Bowie to Marc Bolan. Even Gary Glitter got there first.

The cone bra, the leotard worn as outer wear, the crucifix? Madonna, of course, but at least she managed to look sexy, rather than 'clinical, and strangely antiseptic', in the words of feminist writer Camille Paglia, who acidly adds: 'Lady Gaga is like a laminated piece of ersatz rococo furniture.'

How about Lady Gaga's nun's habit? Madonna, again.

An army-style peaked cap? That's been worn by everyone from the Village People to that most mainstream and pedestrian of performers, Victoria Beckham.

Cold shoulder: Gary Glitter was rocking this look in the 1970s

The feather plumes of a Las Vegas showgirl? Kylie wore these on stage, having appropriated her costume from the chorus of the turn-of-thecentury Folies Bergeres.

How about dressing in drag? Marlene Dietrich in a tux beat Lady Gaga to it decades ago, as well as to the bisexual undertones; Lady Gaga famously proclaimed her attraction to women early on in her career.

How about the black veil she wore over her face to her sister's graduation ceremony? Michael Jackson, anyone?

Or the fact she gave away a lock of hair with the re-release of her double Grammy-winning album, The Fame? The avant garde artist Andy Warhol beat her to it by 40 years.

My goodness, even Rolling Stone magazine has described Lady Gaga, whom it loves to splash across its cover, as 'a cross between Gene Simmons of Kiss and My Little Pony'. Not quite the effect she was after, surely.

The cap fits: But Victoria Beckham got there first

So who is the strange exhibitionist, this magpie who steals other performers' creativity and claims it as her own? Lady Gaga was born plain (literally; she hated her looks as a child) Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in 1986.

She grew up in the comfortable Upper West Side of Manhattan hating her nose, her thighs, everything. She has used every trick in the book to distract from her physical features ever since.

She started out performing in gay clubs and took her name from one of her favourite songs, Radio Ga Ga, by her idols, Queen.

She harbours a dark, dirty secret: she once wrote music for boy band New Kids On The Block. This is like discovering Alice Cooper swapped beads with his nan.

Like the late fashion editor Isabella Blow - another woman who believed she was unattractive, but who wanted more than anything to work in the unforgiving world of fashion and so adopted crazy hats and veils to distract from her protruding teeth - Lady Gaga suffer s from an inferiority complex.

The eyes have it: Mimicking Alice Cooper's make-up

She calls her fans Little Monsters because as a child she felt like one.

You know that, deep down, Lady Gaga doesn't want to wear a lobster hat on her head; she wants to look beautiful. And that is sad, and damning of the way women are always judged, no matter how rich or how talented. Like Blow, Lady Gaga found a soulmate in the late designer Alexander McQueen. She has embraced many of his ideas: corsetry, elaborate masks, bustles and bondage wear.

She even shamelessly hijacked the ideas behind his most brilliant catwalk show - when he sent a disabled model down the runway in intricately carved prosthetic legs - for one of her jaunty videos.

Her take was a jewelled crutch (maybe, given her Faustian pact with Armani, that most corporate of designers, she had just done a deal with Swarovski).

Fishy business: Isabella Blow (right) wore a lobster hat in 1998

But the problem with adopting the clothes of a designer with a huge personality is that you become consumed. McQueen didn't intend for the grotesque shoes in his spring/summer 2010 collection to be worn. But dear, game, gullible Lady Gaga wore hers to travel by plane.

While she might believe she is a groundbreaker when it comes to fashion, it seems she is even more susceptible to labels than the rest of us.

She carries a white Hermes Birkin - that mos t convent ional and expensive of handbags - though hers is, inevitably, covered with scribble.

And while Lady Gaga insists she is trying to challenge stereotypes, tell me why, having been born a brunette, does she persist with long, platinum locks and red lips, a look women have been labouring under since Jean Harlow discovered bleach?

Lady Gaga would love to have us believe she is subversive, but a coat made from hundreds of Kermit the Frog toys means what, exactly?

Given she has worn feathers, leather, reptile skins, fur and, ultimately, flesh, as a polemic against fur it is badly misjudged.

The elaborate, expensive costumes have ruffled a few feathers among performers who are far more innovative than she will ever be.

X Factor's bosses decide to keep Madonna wannabe Katie Waissel in the competition... despite her US record deal

By Rachel Quigley

Saved: X Factor bosses were under pressure to disqualify contestant Katie Waissel after it emerged she has recorded a jazz album in the US, but the decided to keep her in the competition

X Factor hopeful Katie Waissel has learned she will be allowed through to the next round of the hit talent show, the Daily Mail has learned.

The 24-year-old Madonna lookalike wowed the audience and won over Cheryl Cole in the opening episode, securing a place in the next round – despite the fact her nerves nearly got the better of her.

But X Factor bosses came under pressure to disqualify her after it emerged she actually had a record deal in America that she had signed earlier this year under the name of Lola Fontaine.

At the time, a man claiming to be her manager called Jason Silverman revealed that she was signed to a two-record deal with Chamberlain Records and was about to release a record in Los Angeles.

This prompted fears that the hair salon receptionist from Harewood, Herts, would be banned from judges houses auditions – the final round before the live shows next month.

Katie scraped through to boot camp after performing At Last by Etta James after originally fluffing her lines to Queens We Are The Champions after begging Simon Cowell to give her another chance.

US deal: The Madonna lookalike signed a two-year contract under the name Lola Fontaine. Her album is due to be released shortly

When Cheryl Cole asked her what experience she had, Katie replied: 'I sing all the time... anywhere that will have me I sing. I sing on trains with my guitar... I sing in the salon,' but failed to reveal her substantial professional experience, that also included her own YouTube show.

The X Factor has strict rules about contestant’s previous musical work – they face disqualification if they have a music management contract.

At the time a spokesman said: ‘We are looking to the whole thing to see if a contract does exist and if there is found to be one, what the wording is.'

YouTube star: Katie also appeared in her own series, Green Eyed World, which showed her moving to New York to sing. It received 155,000 views

But show bosses were today able to come to an agreement with her record company and gave the 24-year-old the news that she would be going to the judge's house stage with the other hopefuls.

In addition to her recording deal, Miss Waissel also appeared in YouTube show Green Eyed World last year, as Katie Vogel.

The 14-part series followed Katie travelling to New York to pursue her dream of singing.

It was produced by Sprite and received 155,000 hits. But canny viewers on YouTube were sceptical of the singer long ago, with one commenter posting 'this is just a fake show on YouTube'.
